Football Recap: Newark Comes Up Short

After flying high against Logan last Friday, Newark came back down to earth. The Wildcats fell 45-41 to the Canal Winchester Indians on Friday. The Wildcats have struggled against the Indians recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Despite the loss, Newark still got an impressive performance from Bodie Smith, who threw for 330 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 14.3 yards per attempt, and also punched in one rushing score. The Wildcats are 2-1 when Smith posts 250 or more passing yards, but 1-2 otherwise. A healthy portion of Smith's aerial production (81 yards to be exact) went to Jason Giblin, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.

Newark's defeat dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Canal Winchester, their win bumped their record up to 5-1.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Newark will take on rival Pickerington Central at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 1,081 yards in their previous games. Meanwhile, Canal Winchester is set to face off against their familiar foe Teays Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
