It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Hays had no problem doing just that on Friday. They snuck past the Great Bend Panthers with a 19-14 victory. This was payback for the Indians, who suffered a 21-0 loss the last time these two teams met.
Great Bend lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Daxton Minton, who rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown on only six carries, and also threw for 57 yards and a touchdown. Minton's longest rush was for an impressive 65 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Great Bend also got a significant boost from Ian Premer, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 91 yards.
The win made it two in a row for Hays and bumps their season record up to 6-4. As for Great Bend, they moved to 9-1 with that defeat, which also ended their nine-game winning streak.
Hays' road trip will continue as they head out to face Hutchinson at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hutchinson knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 31 points or more in their past five contests -- so hopefully Hays likes a good challenge.
