Softball Game Preview: Gunderson Grizzlies vs. James Lick Comets

The Gunderson Grizzlies will face off against the James Lick Comets at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The timing is sure in Gunderson's favor as the team sits on seven straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while James Lick has been banged up by seven consecutive losses on the road also dating back to last season.

Gunderson easily dispatched Yerba Buena on Wednesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. Gunderson fell just short of Independence by a score of 9-7 on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Grizzlies have suffered since May 3, 2024.

Dezirae Regalado put in work while hitting and pitching. She struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-1.

Regalado wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Chiemi Wong, who scored a run and stole three bases while going 1-for-2. Those three stolen bases gave Wong a new career-high.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 11 runs the game before, James Lick was a bit more limited in their match on Friday. They came up short against Evergreen Valley, falling 12-2. That's two games in a row now that the Comets have lost by exactly ten runs.

James Lick's loss dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Gunderson, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 5-3.

James Lick's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Gunderson hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .469. It's a different story for James Lick, though, as they've only averaged .218. Will they be able to contain Gunderson's hitters?
