Baseball Game Preview: Scarborough Red Storm vs. South Portland Red Riots

The Scarborough Red Storm are taking a road trip to challenge the South Portland Red Riots at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Scarborough has 22 straight victories, South Portland has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Scarborough is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Maine's top teams: Biddeford, who was ranked 18th at the time (Scarborough was ranked third). The Red Storm narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Tigers 2-1.

Scarborough's victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Kam Duggan, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases. Those two stolen bases gave Duggan a new career-high.

Meanwhile, South Portland fell victim to Gorham and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They came up short against the Rams, falling 12-0. Surprisingly, this marked the Red Riots' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Scarborough's win was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-0. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.1 runs over those games. As for South Portland, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-4.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Scarborough has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South Portland struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.

Scarborough skirted past South Portland 5-4 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Red Storm since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
