Baseball Recap: Mayfield Takes a Loss

Mayfield had lost three straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 1-11 to make it four. They came up short against the Fonda-Fultonville Valley Hawks, falling 10-0. The Panthers were not able to make up for their loss to the Valley Hawks from their previous meeting back in May of 2024.

As for Fonda-Fultonville, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-5 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight games by nine runs or more this season.

For Fonda-Fultonville's part, Jacob Sheldon made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit over four innings pitched. Sheldon has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sam Huckans, who went 1-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jake Hernigle, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Mayfield is set to face off against their familiar foe Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile, Fonda-Fultonville will challenge rival Johnstown at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
