Volleyball Game Preview: Orcutt Academy Spartans vs. Santa Maria Saints

Orcutt Academy is on a three-game streak of home losses, and Santa Maria a 14-game streak of away losses dating back to last season. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Tuesday. The Orcutt Academy Spartans will be playing at home against the Santa Maria Saints at 6:00 p.m. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.

On Thursday, Orcutt Academy didn't have quite enough to beat Lompoc and fell 3-2. While the Spartans didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Braves 25-18 in the first set.

Orcutt Academy started the match hot and won the first two sets, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 18-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-24, 15-12.

Despite the loss, Orcutt Academy got top-tier performance from Larissa Lorencz, who had 41 digs. Lorencz has been hot, having posted ten or more digs the last five times she's played. Chelsea Pay also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assist of the season.

Meanwhile, Santa Maria came up short against Sanger West on Saturday and fell 2-0.

Santa Maria's defeat dropped their record down to 3-16. As for Orcutt Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 4-7.

Orcutt Academy came out on top in a nail-biter against Santa Maria when the teams last played back in October of 2024, sneaking past 3-2. Will the Spartans repeat their success, or do the Saints have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
