It was supposed to be their last big tests. The Monarchs from Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and Braves of St. John Bosco (Bellflower), the nation's top two ranked teams, are schedule to collide on Oct. 25 but on Friday, California's ninth-ranked team JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) and No. 11 Servite (Anaheim) had a chance to put a monkey wrench into the battle of 1 vs. 2.
Not even close.
National Player of the Year favorite Bryce Young completed his first 15 passes and accounted for 440 yards and five touchdowns, leading top-ranked Mater Dei to a 56-11 win over Servite.
The nation's top-rated quarterback DJ Uiagalelei was just as good, throwing for 251 yards, rushing for 110 and accounting for six touchdowns, leading Bosco to a 49-10 win over JSerra.
The two blowouts set the tone for a lopsided score Friday as 10 ranked teams won by at least 40 points.
The only other Top 25 team to lose was No. 25 Chaparral (Temecula), which fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, losing 37-17 to un-ranked Vista Murrietta.
