Basketball Recap: Sarah Beaulieu Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Trenton

It was a proper cat-fight when Newberry faced off against Trenton on Thursday. The stars were shining brightly for the Newberry Panthers in a 67-50 win over the Trenton Tigers. The Panthers have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Tigers, too.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Newberry to victory, but perhaps none more so than Sarah Beaulieu, who almost dropped a double-double on 21 points and nine assists. Beaulieu has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Brandy Whitfield was another key player, going 10 for 21 on her way to 25 points in addition to five assists and three steals.

Trenton's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Nyima Gillyard, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 boards. Gillyard is becoming a predictor of Trenton's success: when she posts at least ten boards the team is 6-1 (and 1-2 when she doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Kayley Sloan, who went 6 of 12 on her way to 15 points.

Newberry's record now sits at 6-4. As for Trenton, they moved to 7-3 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

Newberry and Eustis will round out the year against one another at at 4:00 p.m. on December 27th. Newberry has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 187 points over their last three contests. As for Trenton, they will take on P.K. Yonge in a tournament on December 27th.
