Baseball Recap: Gulf Comes Up Short

Gulf was the 4-2 winner over Zephyrhills when they last played one another two weeks ago, but their luck changed this time around. The Gulf Buccaneers fell just short of the Zephyrhills Bulldogs by a score of 5-4 on Monday.

Aidan Coment spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on four hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (five).

At the plate, Gulf saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Diego Cruz, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2. Cruz is becoming a predictor of Gulf's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 2-3 when he doesn't). Gabe Nenno was another, scoring a run and stealing Two bases. while going 1-for-2.

Gulf has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-4 record this season. Zephyrhills' victory ended an eight-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-6.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gulf will head out to face off against Pasco at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Zephyrhills, they will venture away from home to square off against Wiregrass Ranch at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
