Basketball Recap: Evans Knights vs. South Effingham Mustangs

The Evans Knights struggled with assists on Thursday (the South Effingham Mustangs had ten more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Evans suffered a tough 54-28 defeat at the hands of the Mustangs. Evans has not had much luck with the Mustangs recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.

Evans' loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Kimariya Hinton, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 14 rebounds, and Makya Wicker who scored eight points. Hinton is crushing the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season.

It was another big night for Elena Hairston, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and 13 rebounds for South Effingham. Hairston is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Hayden Johanson, who scored 18 points along with seven rebounds.

Evans dropped their record down to 4-20 with that loss, which was their fifth straight on the road. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 27.2 points per game. As for South Effingham, their win bumped their record up to 8-16.

Evans will head out on the road to face off against the Rebels at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Effingham County has now lost nine straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since January 2. As for South Effingham, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Panthers at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Lakeside presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Mustangs in Georgia (the Panthers are ranked 94th, while the Mustangs are ranked 280th).
