Pearl boys soccer team nationally ranked on TOC 2013-14.
On a night meant to honor all of
Pearl's athletic teams from the winter and spring seasons, it was the Pirates boys soccer team that stole the show. Not only did they receive the honor and recognition that they deserved for winning yet another state championship, but they also had one more major accomplishment that they could tack on to their 2013-14 season. This is why the 2nd Annual MaxPreps Soccer Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard was in town to honor the team.
Head coach Chris Rash and his team not only claimed their ninth state title (tied for the most ever in the state of Mississippi), they were also able to finish ranked No. 17 in the nation according to MaxPreps. Unlike the teams that were honored before them, the boys team was allowed to stay on stage and soak up every last minute of their accomplishments.
Aside from receiving the Army National Guard national ranking trophy, the school also presented them with two banners: one that listed each of the school's state titles and another one commemorating the season. While talking about the team, the emcee used the term "dynasty." To win a total of nine state championships and cement yourself as one of the best teams in the nation definitely warrants the term.
On hand for the trophy presentation was Sergeant Purvis of the Mississippi Army National Guard. A Mississippi native, he went to high school at nearby Brandon High School and even had the chance to greet his former football coach, who is now a coach at Pearl. Even though he is a huge football fan, he still felt honored and excited to be able to bring national recognition to a team that is from his area.
Dressed in his service uniform, SGT Purvis presented the Army National Guard national ranking trophy to coach Rash and the Pirates boys soccer team. He also addressed them and talked about how qualities such as teamwork and hard work led to the success that they experienced this season.
In a state where football is king, it is refreshing to see a sport like soccer take center stage. For yet another time on this Tour, the South has proven that it not only produces outstanding football but quality soccer programs as well. And Pearl High School is quickly becoming known for its talents on the soccer field. With nine state championships to their name, you better believe that coach Rash and his team are aiming for 10 state titles, and to be the sole possessor of the most state titles in the state of Mississippi.
Congratulations Pearl High School! Hope to see you next year on the Tour of Champions!
