Basketball Recap: Calvin Christian's Loss Ends Five-Game Winning Streak at Home

Calvin Christian was the 42-39 winner over Escondido when they last played one another back in April of 2021, but their luck changed this time around. The Calvin Christian Crusaders received a blow on Tuesday as they fell 55-38 to the Escondido Cougars. The Crusaders have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

When it comes to explaining why Calvin Christian lost, don't look at Sawyer Goggin. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 20 points and ten rebounds. Goggin has become a key player for Calvin Christian: the team is 4-2 when he posts at least ten boards, but 2-3 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Garrett Becker, who posted nine points and six rebounds.

Escondido found their leader in sophomore Maddox Mendoza, who put up 21 points. With that strong performance, Mendoza is now averaging an impressive 15.3 points per game. Another player making a difference was Nathan James, who posted 11 points.

Calvin Christian's loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 6-5. As for Escondido, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Calvin Christian will venture away from home to square off against Pacific Ridge at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Escondido, they will challenge Orange Glen at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
