Preview: Luling Eagles vs. Nixon-Smiley Mustangs
Luling and Nixon-Smiley are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2019, but not for long. The Luling Eagles will be playing at home against the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Luling focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 40 on Friday.
Luling's recent rough patch got a bit rougher after their third straight loss. They received a tough blow as they fell 52-37 to Marion. Luling has struggled against Marion recently, as their game on Friday was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.
Luling's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Natalie Gomez, who scored 12 points along with two steals, and Skylar Dredla who scored eight points along with seven rebounds and two blocks. Evyn Bryant was another key contributor, scoring four points along with 12 rebounds and two steals.
Nixon-Smiley posted their biggest victory since November 30, 2023 on Friday. They claimed a resounding 55-27 win over Great Hearts Northern Oaks on the road. The win was some much needed relief for Nixon-Smiley as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Luling has been struggling recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-17 record this season. As for Nixon-Smiley, their win ended a six-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-22.
Luling was dealt a bruising 51-21 loss at the hands of Nixon-Smiley in their previous matchup on January 5th. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Nixon-Smiley's Janaelyn White, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds.
