Football Recap: Mount Miguel Comes Up Short

Mount Miguel dropped down to 4-2 on Friday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They were just a hair shy of victory and fell 26-25 to the Oceanside Pirates. Despite 92 more yards than the Pirates, the Matadors couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.

Mount Miguel's loss came despite strong showings from Jeremiah Loper and Aj Logan. Loper threw for 215 yards and four touchdowns, while Logan picked up 147 receiving yards and three scores. Logan has been hot recently, having posted two or more receiving touchdowns the last three times he's played. Mount Miguel also got a significant boost from Jayden Hunter, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 83 yards.

As for Oceanside, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 33.5 points over those games.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Oceanside to victory, but perhaps none more so than Neke Letuli, who rushed for 154 yards and one TD. Those 154 rushing yards gave Letuli a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of SJ Poumele, who rushed for 73 yards and one touchdown on only nine carries.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mount Miguel will square off against Helix at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The game will give the Matadors their first taste of in-conference action this season. As for Oceanside, they will take on San Marcos at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. The Pirates will need to watch out since the Knights have now posted at least 31 points in their last four matchups.
