Basketball Recap: Amherst Comes Up Short

Amherst was the 48-42 winner over Elm Creek when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The match between the Amherst Broncos and the Elm Creek Buffaloes didn't end well, with the Amherst Broncos falling 57-39. While losing is never fun, the Broncos can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 127th, while the Buffaloes are ranked 36th).

AnnDee Jaixen was Amherst's leading scorer, having posted eight points. Jaixen also led the team in assists with two. Keelie Hagan held things down on the boards with 12 rebounds.

Leading Elm Creek to victory were Kendal Cavenee and Ashley Bauer. Cavenee went 8-for-15 en route to 19 points along with seven steals and five assists, while Bauer posted 16 points and three steals. Cavenee has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Chelsea Kottich, who earned six points.

Amherst's defeat dropped their record down to 12-8. As for Elm Creek, the win (which was their 14th in a row) raised their record to 19-1.

Amherst has already played their next contest, a 40-35 loss against Overton on the 8th. As for Elm Creek, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 49-40 victory against Wilcox-Hildreth on the 8th.
