Pequot - Sassacus recap Nov. 7, 2012
Hyde Leadership extended the longest winning streak in Pequot - Sassacus this week by beating East Hampton/Vinal RVT, 56-6. This was the team's eighth consecutive win.
Cromwell and Old Saybrook-Westbrook played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Cromwell eventually emerging with a 15-14 victory.
Brandan Basil provided a threat through the air and on the ground as North Branford beat Coginchaug Regional. He completed 18 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 15 yards. Basil's favorite target this week was Alex McGuigan, who caught five passes for 105 yards.
Phil Cohen put up the best numbers through the air as Valley Regional/Old Lyme topped Lewis Mills. He finished with a total of 12 completions for 140 yards and three touchdowns. Cohen's favorite target this week was Evan Smith, who caught four passes for 72 yards.
Ezekiel Nixon was the most productive running back in the league this week. In six carries, he ran for 159 yards as Hyde Leadership defeated the Blue Devils. Corey Johnson also contributed to the rushing game with 57 yards on the ground.
North Branford's Basil and Chris Caron have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading Pequot - Sassacus in both passing and receiving yards. Basil has thrown for 1888 yards this season, while Caron, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 30 catches for 698 yards. Derrick Villard from the Panthers leads the league in rushing with 979 yards.
Entering into this week's contest against Nonnewaug, Basil is short just 112 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season.
Cromwell's Villard needs only 21 yards against the Warriors next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Valley Regional/Old Lyme takes on Chris Eckert's team. Tim King's team is currently in fourth, while the Panthers are in third.
Melvin Wells' team took down the Bellringers 56-6 last week, the largest margin of any game. Nixon caught one passes for six yards in the win.
