League recap: Veterans Memorial stuns Roma in upset

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Veterans Memorial, who took down 715th ranked Roma, 28-27. Santos Villarreal threw for 150 yards and one touchdown and ran for 75 yards in the win.

Mission extended the longest winning streak in 4A Region IV District 32 this week by beating Rio Grande City, 37-24. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Eagles.

Sergio Guerrero was the best wideout in the league this week as Mission topped the Rattlers. Guerrero racked up 11 receptions for 111 yards. Robert Veliz helped Mission's passing attack out by catching two balls for 53 yards.

Victor Meza was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 10 carries, he ran for 149 yards as the Patriots bested Rio Grande City.

Isaiah Garza put up the best numbers through the air as Mercedes defeated Valley View. He finished with nine completions for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Garza's favorite target this week was Carlos Quintanilla, who caught four passes for 65 yards.

Veterans Memorial's Villarreal and Isaac Guerrero have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 4A Region IV District 32 in both passing and receiving yards. Villarreal has thrown for 1446 yards this season, while Guerrero has 33 catches for 539 yards. Mathew Guzman from the Tigers leads the league in rushing with 923 yards.

Mercedes' Guzman is a mere 77 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Yellowjackets take on Michael Uribe's team. Edcouch-Elsa is currently in third, while the Tigers are in second.

David Gilpin's team moved up to 748 from 810 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Patriots were able to make move up by besting the Gladiators 28-27.
