Basketball Recap: Wheeler's Run of Three Straight Victories Now Over

If Wheeler was feeling good fresh off their 56-23 takedown of Calumet New Tech on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Wheeler Bearcats fell 65-53 to the Hammond Bishop Noll Warriors on Saturday. The Bearcats' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Despite the loss, Wheeler saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Izabela Schumacher dropped a double-double on 13 points and 24 boards. Those 24 rebounds set a new season-high mark for Schumacher. The team also got some help courtesy of Kylie Simpson, who posted 11 points and six boards.

Even though they lost, Wheeler smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 26 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in five consecutive matchups.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Hammond Bishop Noll to victory, but perhaps none more so than Ecrin Mart, who went 8 of 20 en route to 20 points in addition to five rebounds and four steals. The contest was Mart's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Jaiden Hall also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Wheeler's defeat dropped their record down to 6-15. As for Hammond Bishop Noll, their win bumped their record up to 5-13.

Wheeler didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 50-42 victory against Hobart on the 28th. Hammond Bishop Noll has also already played their next match, a 50-42 win against Griffith on the 28th.
