Basketball Recap: Trenton Rhodes' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Pershing County over Battle Mountain

After flying high against Silver Stage last Saturday, Pershing County came back down to earth. The Pershing County Mustangs took a 63-53 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Battle Mountain Longhorns on Friday. The defeat continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Longhorns: they've now lost five in a row.

Pershing County's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Trenton Rhodes, who posted 15 points. The dominant performance gave Rhodes a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Travis Donaldson, who scored 12 points.

Battle Mountain found their leader in sophomore Geovanni Ruvalcaba, who had 18 points. Ruvalcaba's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Brodie Smith was another key player, going 5 of 9 on his way to 12 points and five rebounds.

Pershing County's defeat dropped their record down to 8-11. As for Battle Mountain, their win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 11-5.

Pershing County didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 64-46 loss against West Wendover on the 18th. Battle Mountain has also already played their next contest, a 58-25 victory against Coral Academy of Science - Reno on the 18th.
