Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Brehner Jackson and Eric Chavez Lead Canon City to Victory

There's no place like home for Canon City, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Tuesday. They secured a 45-39 W over the Widefield Gladiators on Friday. This was a revenge game for the Tigers: when they faced off against the Gladiators last Tuesday, they had to take a 60-45 defeat.

Leading Canon City to victory were Eric Chavez and Brehner Jackson. Chavez went 7-for-10 to rack up 17 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals, while Jackson posted 11 points and five steals. Jackson is becoming a predictor of Canon City's success: when he posts at least five steals the team is undefeated (and 5-14 when he doesn't).

Several Gladiators players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Trevin Stemler, who dropped a double-double with ten points and ten boards. Stemler is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Josiah McNeal, who earned five points and five rebounds.

Canon City pushed their record up to 8-14 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.3 points over those games. As for Widefield, their loss dropped their record down to 9-11.

Canon City didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 59-30 defeat against Palmer on the 20th. As for Widefield, they have also already played their next contest, a 55-48 loss against Cheyenne Mountain on the 17th.
