Basketball Recap: Sophia Benich's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Academic Magnet over Woodland

Academic Magnet fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Woodland on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Woodland Wolverines 44-40. The Raptors just can't catch a break and have now endured three losses in a row.

Academic Magnet lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Sophia Benich, who posted 17 points and five steals. That was a full 42.5% of Academic Magnet's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's scored more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Josie Barrineau, who put up nine points and five rebounds.

Carmen Allen went supernova for Woodland, almost dropping a double-double on 14 points and nine steals. Those 14 points gave Allen a new career-high. Lenaya Ross was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on nine points and 12 boards.

Academic Magnet's defeat dropped their record down to 5-9. As for Woodland, their win bumped their record up to 4-11.

Academic Magnet didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 48-45 victory against Andrews on the 28th. As for Woodland, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 49-18 loss against Philip Simmons on the 28th.
