Recap: El Camino Wildcats vs. Monterey Trail Mustangs

The El Camino Wildcats pushed their score all the way to 73 on Saturday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell just short of Monterey Trail by a score of 75-73. While losing is never fun, El Camino can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 201st, while Monterey Trail is ranked 35th).

Several Wildcats players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Isaiah Pomare, who scored 18 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brandon Boone, who scored 14 points.

Monterey Trail's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kentrell Kelly led the charge by scoring 15 points along with nine rebounds. The contest was Kelly's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Brandon Gibson Jr was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with six rebounds and five assists.

El Camino's loss dropped their record down to 8-8. As for Monterey Trail, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-1.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. El Camino's road trip will continue as they head out to face San Dieguito Academy at 7:00 p.m. on January 9th. Monterey Trail and River City will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 3rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
