Volleyball Recap: McDonald County Comes Up Short

After flying high against Aurora on Tuesday, McDonald County came back down to earth. The Mustangs lost 3-0 to the Mt. Vernon Mountaineers on Thursday. The Mustangs haven't had much luck with the Mountaineers recently, as the team has come up short the last nine times they've met.

While McDonald County was kept off the board, it wasn't for a lack of trying: they cut into Mt. Vernon's winning margin in every set. The match finished with set scores of 25-8, 25-15, 25-20.

Kaberlyn Burchett paced McDonald County's offense, picking up five kills. Burchett got some help from Jamie Washam and her 12 assists. Leslie Velazques controlled things from the service line, finishing with two aces.

Among those leading the charge was Averee Swillum, who had nine digs and four aces. That's the most aces she has posted since back in October of 2024.

McDonald County's loss dropped their record down to 4-13-2. As for Mt. Vernon, they pushed their record up to 12-6-2 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season.

McDonald County has already played their next matchup, a 3-0 defeat against Camdenton on the 4th. As for Mt. Vernon, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 2-0 win against Aurora on the 4th.
