Baseball Recap: Sedgwick County's Luck Changes for the Better on Saturday

Sedgwick County had lost nine games straight , but after bumping their record up to 5-9 on Saturday that streak is in the rearview. Everything went their way against the Peetz Bulldogs as they made off with a 9-2 victory. The Cougars not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since March 22nd (when they won 16-7).

Tate Renquist made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. He is becoming a predictor of Sedgwick County's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 2-1 (and 3-8 when he doesn't). Renquist was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Josh Kler was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. He has become a key player for Sedgwick County: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 2-9 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Roman Kirk, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.

As for Peetz, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season. They were red-hot at the plate heading into the contest (they scored no less than ten runs in the three games prior), but Sedgwick County's pitchers proved too tough.

On Peetz's side, they saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Rhyder Bayne, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. Bayne has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Sedgwick County beat Peetz by a score of 9-8 later that day.
