Basketball Game Preview: Miller Buccaneers vs. Flour Bluff Hornets

The Miller Buccaneers and the Flour Bluff Hornets will face off at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. Miller has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.

Miller is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They came out on top against Gregory-Portland by a score of 74-65 on Friday. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Buccaneers' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1017th, while the Wildcats are ranked 164th).

Miller's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Dexter Brantley, who went 7 of 12 en route to 17 points. Brantley is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for three straight games. Another player making a difference was George Simmons, who posted ten points in addition to six assists and three steals.

Miller smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in five consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Flour Bluff unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Friday. They fell to Ray 45-41. While the Hornets didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Texans 12-8 in the first quarter.

Miller is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a massive bump to their 5-6 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.3 points per game. As for Flour Bluff, their loss dropped their record down to 11-11.

Miller didn't have too much breathing room in their match against Flour Bluff in their previous meeting back in February of 2020, but they still walked away with a 73-69 victory. Will Miller repeat their success, or does Flour Bluff have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
