Basketball Recap: Ronnie Staley's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Wayne over Hoover

Wayne managed to slip by Hoover the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Wayne Pioneers came up short against the Hoover Huskies on Monday, falling 76-54. The matchup was a close 33-31 at the break, but unfortunately for the Pioneers it sure didn't stay that way.

Wayne's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ronnie Staley, who went 7-for-11 en route to 15 points. What's more, Staley also posted a 64% shooting accuracy, which is the highest he's achieved since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Isaac Meddings, who posted 13 points and six assists.

Hoover had a senior duo take command as Dane Hatfield earned 25 points and Donovan Brown had 24 points. The game was Hatfield's tenth in a row with at least 19 points. Sam Kee was another key player, putting up nine points.

Wayne is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 14-6. As for Hoover, their victory bumped their record up to 14-4.

Looking ahead, Wayne will head out to take on Lincoln County at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Hoover, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 81-40 win against Roane County on the 25th.
