Baseball Recap: Mt. Vernon Takes a Loss

Mt. Vernon had lost five straight at home, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 1-6 to make it six. They fell 6-2 to the Evansville Reitz Panthers. The Wildcats were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Panthers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Mt. Vernon saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Levi Embrey, who went 2-for-3 with one run.

As for Evansville Reitz, the win snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 3-4 record. That four run margin sets a new team best for them this season.

On Evansville Reitz's side, Josiah Spanner looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The Panthers are 2-1 when Spanner allows one or fewer earned runs, but 1-3 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Landon McCutchan, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Bradyn Angel, who went 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Mt. Vernon and Evansville Reitz could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Indiana Rankings. The Wildcats will take on Forest Park at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (270 vs. 111). Meanwhile, Evansville Reitz (ranked 159th) will meet Jasper (ranked 47th) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
