Basketball Recap: Bear Grass Charter Takes a Loss

Bear Grass Charter lost against Gates County back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Bear Grass Charter Bears were outmatched by the Gates County Red Barons and fell 78-44. While losing is never fun, the Bears can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 250th, while the Red Barons are ranked 54th).

Bear Grass Charter's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Aubery Dotson, who went 6 for 13 en route to 21 points and three steals, and Carly Bembridge, who posted five points. Dotson is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last six games she's played. Another player making a difference was Hannah Lilley, who had six points and eight rebounds.

Gates County's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Semayia Cross led the charge by going 9 of 11 on her way to 19 points along with six steals and five assists. The dominant performance gave Cross a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Zoey Nowell, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 16 boards.

Bear Grass Charter's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-5. As for Gates County, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 15-0.

Bear Grass Charter won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Ocracoke at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Gates County has already played their next game (against North East Carolina Prep), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
