Basketball Recap: Harlingen's Run of Four Straight Wins Now Over

If Harlingen was riding high fresh off their 64-37 takedown of Cigarroa on Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Harlingen Cardinals took a 68-58 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wagner Thunderbirds on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Cardinals can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 106th, while the Thunderbirds are ranked tenth).

Harlingen's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Carlie Martinez, who went 6 of 10 en route to 16 points. Martinez continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Amaris Martinez, who posted 12 points and six assists.

Even though they lost, Harlingen was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wagner only racked up 11 assists.

La Sneed continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Wagner, going 6 of 8 from beyond the arc on her way to 46 points along with eight steals and six boards. Sneed's morning made it 19 games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jenae Moore, who put up nine points.

With the loss, Harlingen broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 15-5. As for Wagner, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-3.

Harlingen wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 31-25 victory against Nixon on the 6th. As for Wagner, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 68-41 win against Weslaco on the 6th.
