Basketball Recap: Lamar Comes Up Short

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Lamar can now relate to. They were dealt an 88-57 defeat at the hands of the Abbeville Panthers on Monday. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (56), the Silver Foxes still had to take the loss.

When it comes to explaining why Lamar lost, don't look at NyShaun 'Shaun' Quillen. Despite the final result, he posted 16 points and six rebounds. Quillen is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Lamont Williams, who put up nine points in addition to six boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Lamar smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in seven consecutive games.

Justin Rollinson continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Abbeville, going 6-for-15 to rack up 16 points along with eight assists and five steals. That's the most steals Rollinson has posted since back in January. Jaylen Baylor was another key player, dropping a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Lamar has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 10-17 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.0 points over those games. As for Abbeville, the victory was the 18th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 20-2.

Lamar does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Abbeville, they will face off against Hunter-Kinard-Tyler at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Abbeville's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
