Basketball Recap: Custer County Comes Up Short

After flying high against Fowler on Friday, Custer County came back down to earth. The Bobcats fell 69-60 to the Rye Thunderbolts on Saturday. While losing is never fun, the Bobcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 213th, while the Thunderbolts are ranked 77th).

Eli Guzman produced another solid performance shooting 7-for-10 from long range and dropping a double-double with 33 points and 12 boards for Rye. The matchup was Guzman's ninth in a row with at least 16 points. Another player making a difference was Brady Baumgartner, who posted 11 points.

Custer County's loss dropped their record down to 2-4. As for Rye, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-1.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. After both having extra time off, Custer County and Evangel Christian Academy will shake off the cobwebs and hit the court against one another at 7:00 p.m. on January 9, 2026. As for Rye, they will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Manitou Springs at 7:30 p.m. on January 7, 2026. The Thunderbolts will need to watch out since the Mustangs have now posted at least 55 points in their last three games.
