Softball Recap: Rio Rico Wins Going Away Against Thatcher

It was a Battle of the Birds when Rio Rico duked it out with Thatcher on Tuesday. The Hawks blew past the Eagles 13-6. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Hawks.

Victoria Madrid made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. Those ten strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ayleen Salcido, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Mariana Santamaria, who scored three runs while going 1-for-3.

Rio Rico kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Rio Rico picked up their first home win, bumping their record up to 2-9. As for Thatcher, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-9 record this season.

Rio Rico wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, a 25-0 victory against Amphitheater on the 2nd. As for Thatcher, they will head out to take on Safford at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Eagles' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bulldogs have averaged an impressive 7.2 runs per game this season.
