Mt. Vernon came tearing into Wednesday's matchup with nine straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Lakewood Lancers a 3-0 shutout. That's more bragging rights for the Yellowjackets, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Jocelyn Scarbury made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 11 over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run.

Scarbury wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Grace Bates, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Mt. Vernon pushed their record up to 16-2 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Lakewood, their defeat ended a ten-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 15-4.

Mt. Vernon and Lakewood should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. The Yellowjackets will challenge Licking Heights at 5:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (18 vs. 183). Meanwhile, Lakewood (ranked 97th) will meet Johnstown-Monroe (ranked 202nd) at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
