Preview: Weslaco Panthers vs. San Benito Greyhounds

Weslaco has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will face off against The San Benito Greyhounds at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Last Friday, everything came up roses for Weslaco at home against Hanna as the team secured a 44-6 victory. Given Weslaco's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 326th, while Hanna is ranked 870th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Weslaco relied on the efforts of Andres Sepulveda, who threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns while completing 87.5% of his passes, and Elias Rodriguez jr, who rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries. Rodriguez jr really tore up the turf during one magnificent 74-yard run. The team also got some help courtesy of Francisco Trevino, who picked up 94 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile, San Benito put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. Everything went their way against Los Fresnos as San Benito made off with a 38-14 win.

San Benito's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Aaron Corona, who threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns while completing 94.1% of his passes, and Fabian Garcia, who gained 224 total yards and two touchdowns. Garcia hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for three straight games. Justin Montemayor also helped out with an impressive 85 receiving yards.

Weslaco's victory was their seventh straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 9-0. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-8 Hanna and 1-7 Rivera (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 39.1% over those games). As for San Benito, their victory bumped their record up to 9-0.

Weslaco was taken down by San Benito 44-10 when the teams last played back in November of 2022. Can Weslaco avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
