Softball Recap: Salem Beats Johnston City for Their Ninth Straight Victory

Salem extended their winning streak to nine on Wednesday, bumping their season record up to 14-2 in the process. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Johnston City Indians 11-9. For the Wildcats, this counts as revenge for the 5-4 win the Indians walked away with the last time they faced one another back in April of 2023.

Marah Johnson was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with one home run. Another player making a difference was Isabella Decker, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

As for Johnston City, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-8. That's two games in a row now that they have lost by exactly two runs.

On Johnston City's side, Peyton Smith and Lilli Armes stepped up to the plate in a big way. Smith went a perfect 4-for-4 with three stolen bases and three runs, while Armes went 3-for-4 with five RBI and one double. Smith has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times she's played. Makenzie Mowery was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two doubles.

Coming up, Salem is taking a road trip to square off against Freeburg at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Johnston City, they will look to defend their home field on Monday against Carbondale at 4:30 p.m. The Indians are facing the Terriers at the right time seeing as the Terriers are stuck on a five-game losing streak.
