The Winfield Warriors will take on the Clopton Hawks at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
As a matter of fact, Winfield put up the most points they have all season on Friday. They fell just short of St. Louis HomeSchool P by a score of 16-15. The defeat continues a trend for the Warriors in their meetings with the Patriots: they've now lost four in a row.
DJ Barth was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with four runs, one triple, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brennan Howard, who scored two runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
Even though they lost, Winfield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, while Clopton put up plenty of runs on Friday, the same can't be said for Wellsville-Middletown. Clopton blew past Wellsville-Middletown 15-0. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Hawks.
Peter Daskalakis was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Daskalakis was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.
In other batting news, John Grillo was incredible, going 1-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Tucker Salmons was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base.
Winfield's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Clopton, their win bumped their record up to 2-0.
Everything went Winfield's way against Clopton in their previous meeting back in March of 2019, as Winfield made off with a 16-4 victory. Does Winfield have another victory up their sleeve, or will Clopton turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
