Softball Preview: Cottonwood Colts vs. Skyline Eagles
The Cottonwood Colts will head out on the road to square off against the Skyline Eagles at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Skyline took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Cottonwood, who comes in off a win.
After low-scoring totals in their previous four contests, Cottonwood brought some dynamite into their most recent matchup. They blew past Jordan 15-4. The win was just what Cottonwood needed coming off of an 18-1 loss in their prior contest.
Gretta Lewis was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and only one hit while striking out ten over six innings pitched. Lewis was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
In other batting news, Cottonwood got a massive performance out of Lola Grover, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, a triple, and a stolen base. Alanis Gutierrez was another key contributor, scoring four runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Skyline was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their sixth straight defeat. They fell just short of West by a score of 19-18. Both teams can probably skip cardio this week after making that many trips around the bases.
Skyline got a massive performance out of Isabelle Rupp, who went 2-for-5 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Lindsay Nelson, who went 2-for-6 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs.
Even though they lost, Skyline kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Cottonwood's victory ended a 13-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-8. As for Skyline, their loss dropped their record down to 2-7.
Monday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Cottonwood has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .470. However, it's not like Skyline struggles in that department as they've averaged .478. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Cottonwood might still be hurting after the 12-0 defeat they got from Skyline in their previous matchup back in May of 2022.
