The Sheldon Huskies will take on the Archbishop Mitty Monarchs in a tournament on Thursday. Sheldon is coming into the game hot, having won their last six games.
Last Friday, Sheldon got the win against Cosumnes Oaks by a conclusive 16-2. Considering the Huskies have won six contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Micah Kennedy was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off seven hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBI and two doubles. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in February.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Natalia Aguilar, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (three). Nicole Camacho-Vasquez was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
Sheldon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in six consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Archbishop Mitty got themselves on the board against St. Ignatius College Preparatory on Wednesday, but St. Ignatius College Preparatory never followed suit. They came out on top against the Wildcats by a score of 4-0.
Not much got past Kyleigh Mace, who gave up just two hits and racked up eight Ks to keep St. Ignatius College Preparatory off the board.
On the hitting side, Rylie Hicks was excellent, scoring a run while going 3-for-3. Danika Contreras also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Archbishop Mitty's victory was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-2. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 8.4 runs this season. As for Sheldon, their record now sits at 10-3.
Thursday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Sheldon has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .446. However, it's not like Archbishop Mitty struggles in that department as they've averaged .447. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Sheldon couldn't quite finish off Archbishop Mitty in their previous meeting back in April of 2023 and fell 6-4. Can the Huskies avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
