Preview: Seventy-First Falcons vs. Douglas Byrd Eagles

Seventy-First is 9-1 against Douglas Byrd since January of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Seventy-First Falcons on the road again and play against the Douglas Byrd Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on January 23rd. Seventy-First has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.

Last Friday, Seventy-First beat Lumberton 63-54.

Seventy-First's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Alani-Skye Wilkerson, who scored 18 points along with nine rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Wilkerson has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Mariyah Massey, who scored 12 points along with four steals.

Meanwhile, Douglas Byrd's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. They took a 40-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of Purnell Swett. Douglas Byrd has not had much luck with Purnell Swett recently, as the team's come up short the last five times they've met.

The losing side was boosted by Jazmine Burns, who scored 16 points along with nine rebounds and two blocks. That's the first time this season that she scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Jamiyah Carroll, who scored four points along with ten rebounds and six steals.

Seventy-First pushed their record up to 6-7 with that win, which was their third straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.3 points per game. As for Douglas Byrd, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-11.

Seventy-First couldn't quite finish off Douglas Byrd when the teams last played back in February of 2023 and fell 2-0. Can Seventy-First avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
