Volleyball Recap: Mater Dei Catholic's Winning Streak Snapped at 15 Games

It was a good run, but Mater Dei Catholic unfortunately witnessed the end of their 15-game winning streak on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Sweetwater Red Devils by a score of 3-2. If the Crusaders were looking for revenge after losing 3-2 to the Red Devils when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Mater Dei Catholic actually scored more points across those five sets (102-97), but sadly they still had to settle for second. The match finished with set scores of 25-23, 16-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-6.

Sweetwater got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Darren Hermoso out in front who had 13 digs and eight kills. Hermoso has been hot recently, having posted five or more kills the last three times he's played.

Mater Dei Catholic's loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 18-8. As for Sweetwater, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 23-7.

Coming up, Mater Dei Catholic will be playing at home against Mar Vista at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Crusaders are facing the Mariners at the right time seeing as the Mariners are stuck on a five-game losing streak. After both having extra time off, Sweetwater and Montgomery will shake off the rust and duke it out at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
