Volleyball Recap: Olivia Staley's Big Game Can't Quite Lead East Wilkes over Ashe County

East Wilkes lost against Ashe County back in September and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Cardinals lost 3-0 to the Huskies. The Cardinals have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back matches.

East Wilkes was held off the scoreboard, but that almost wasn't the case: they kept the second set very close. The final score came out to 25-19, 25-23, 25-17.

Several Cardinals players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Olivia Staley, who had 11 digs, ten kills, and three aces. Staley is crushing it when it comes to kills: she's had at least six every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Leila Dobbins, who had 23 assists and 12 digs.

Ashe County got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Gracie Finley out in front who had 12 kills, ten digs, and five aces. Those five aces gave Finley a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kinzley Blevins, who had 21 digs and three assists.

East Wilkes' loss dropped their record down to 5-14. As for Ashe County, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 16 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-7 record this season.

East Wilkes has already played their next contest (against North Surry), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Ashe County, they will head out on the road to face off against West Wilkes at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
