Avery County is 8-2 against Owen since February of 2020 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Wednesday. The Avery County Vikings will venture away from home to take on the Owen Warhorses at 6:30 p.m. Avery County is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.1 points per game this season.
Avery County will bounce into Wednesday's game after beating Rosman, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. Avery County took their matchup on Thursday with ease, bagging a 51-21 win over Rosman. Given the Vikings' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 138th, while the Tigers are ranked 466th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Avery County found their leader in sophomore Marley Jones, who went 6 for 12 en route to 19 points in addition to seven rebounds and five steals. Jones has become a key player for Avery County: the team is 9-2 when she posts at least five steals, but 2-3 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Hallie Johnson, who posted eight points.
Avery County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rosman only pulled down nine offensive rebounds.
Meanwhile, Owen was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They were outmatched by Mountain Heritage and fell 49-10. The Warhorses were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 38-3.
Despite the loss, Owen saw an underclassman step up: freshman Katie Knighton had three points and three steals. The dominant performance gave Knighton a new career-high in points.
Avery County's victory bumped their record up to 11-5. As for Owen, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-16.
This contest is shaping up to be a blowout: Avery County hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 56.1 points per game. It's a different story for Owen, though, as they've been averaging only 24.4 points. The only thing between Avery County and another offensive beatdown is Owen. Will they be able to keep them contained?
