Cannon extended their losing streak to 13 on Thursday, dropping them down to 1-17. They fell 6-1 to the Charlotte Latin Hawks. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Hawks this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 11-0 on Tuesday.
Thomas Smith was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits.
On the hitting side, Cannon saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Colin Kieley, who went 1-for-3 with one double. That double marked the first that Kieley has hit this season.
As for Charlotte Latin, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-8. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games.
On Charlotte Latin's side, Sam Yin made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out eight over seven innings pitched. Yin has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Peyton Booker was excellent, going 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Jaden Hawa was another key player, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
Coming up, Cannon is taking a road trip to square off against Legion Collegiate Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Lancers' pitching crew has only allowed 3.7 runs per game this season, so the Cougars' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Charlotte Latin, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Covenant Day at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
