Southwestern had lost three straight at home, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 10-18 to make it four. They fell just short of the Gillespie Miners by a score of 4-2. The Piasa Birds were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Miners apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.
Johnny Kunz was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one double. Ike Austin was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
As for Gillespie, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.9 runs over those games.
On Gillespie's side, the team relied heavily on Luke Schuckenbrock, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. Schuckenbrock has become a key player for the Miners: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-8 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jack Kaylor, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
