Softball Recap: Ponchatoula Comes Up Short

Ponchatoula blew Denham Springs out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Friday Denham Springs got their revenge. The Ponchatoula Green Wave fell just short of the Denham Springs Yellowjackets by a score of 10-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Green Wave have suffered since March 1st.

Abby Dagro was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, she struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and seven unearned) runs off ten hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one triple and one RBI. That triple was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Rae'El Wheat was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Paityn Lancaster, who scored two runs while getting on base in two of her five plate appearances.

Ponchatoula has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost nine of their last 12 matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-9 record this season. The victory made it two in a row for Denham Springs and bumps their season record up to 7-11.

Ponchatoula and Denham Springs could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Louisiana Rankings. Ponchatoula (ranked 96th) will meet Mandeville (ranked 23rd) at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Denham Springs will face off against Walker at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday down 91 places (113 vs. 22).
