Softball Recap: Killingly Comes Up Short

Killingly extended their losing streak to five on Monday, dropping them down to 10-11. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Torrington Raiders. The Trailblazers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Raiders apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in June of 2021.

Danielle Veillette was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she struck out eight batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits.

At the plate, Jayden Durand was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run.

As for Torrington, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 14-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.6 runs over those games.

On Torrington's side, Sophia Pergola was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Pergola has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Pergola wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Julia Rinaldi, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

While Killingly had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
