Football Recap: Upland Piles Up the Points Against Ayala

Upland barely beat Ayala the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Highlanders/Scots blew past the Bulldogs 37-0 on Friday. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Highlanders/Scots' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 221st, while the Bulldogs are ranked 541st).

Upland's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lequand (Jack Jack) Jackson, who threw for 157 yards and two TDs on only ten passes, and also rushed for 37 yards. The dominant performance also gave (Jack Jack) Jackson a new career-high in passer rating (152.1).

Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Upland proved: they limited Ayala to a paltry -0.7 yards per carry. While six picked up at least one total tackle, Nick Bester stood above the rest. He rushed for 63 yards, and also picked up 43 receiving yards. Upland's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.6.

Upland's defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for four sacks. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Nathan Edmonds and Joshua Uwagboe, who each picked up 1.5 sacks apiece. Upland received some extra help from Aiden Davis, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Upland's win ended a six-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-7. As for Ayala, they are on an 18-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-9.

Looking ahead, Upland will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Etiwanda at 7:00 p.m. The Highlanders/Scots will be up against the Eagles' rather soft defense (which has allowed 29.67 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Ayala, they will host Damien at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
