Basketball Game Preview: South Decatur Cougars vs. Trinity Lutheran Cougars

South Decatur is 1-6 against Trinity Lutheran since January of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The South Decatur Cougars will venture away from home to square off against the Trinity Lutheran Cougars at 1:00 p.m. South Decatur will be strutting in after a win while Trinity Lutheran will be coming in after a loss.

Last Tuesday, in a tight matchup that could have gone either way, South Decatur made off with a 37-36 victory over Edinburgh.

South Decatur got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Makalya Somers out in front who posted 11 points in addition to eight boards and five steals. The dominant performance gave Somers a new career-high in steals. Another player making a difference was Taylor Somers, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds.

South Decatur smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Edinburgh only pulled down four offensive boards.

Meanwhile, Trinity Lutheran suffered their biggest defeat since January 9, 2024 on Thursday. They came up short against Floyd Central, falling 57-33. While losing is never fun, the Cougars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 146th, while the Highlanders are ranked 27th).

South Decatur will need focus on slowing down Madison Keith, one of several Trinity Lutheran players who made an impact when they last played. She had 11 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Marley Warren, who scored eight points.

South Decatur's victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 11-10. As for Trinity Lutheran, the loss snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 11-7 record.

South Decatur didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Trinity Lutheran in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, but they still walked away with a 50-45 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for South Decatur since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
