Baseball Recap: Washburn's Win Ends Six-Game Losing Streak on the Road

Washburn hadn't done well against Cumberland Gap recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Washburn Pirates walked away with a 6-1 victory over the Cumberland Gap Panthers. For the Pirates, this counts as revenge for the 5-4 win the Panthers walked away with the last time they faced one another back in March of 2024.

Matthew Harville was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Those runs marked the first that he scored this season.

Washburn's victory ended a six-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-5. As for Cumberland Gap, with the loss, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 4-3.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Washburn will challenge Apostolic Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Cumberland Gap, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Cumberland Gap Panthers take on Bell County Bobcats at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
