Basketball Recap: Luke Fulda's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Cross over Charleston Collegiate

Cross lost against Charleston Collegiate back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Cross Stingrays fell 66-59 to the Charleston Collegiate Sundevils. While losing is never fun, the Stingrays can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 271st, while the Sundevils are ranked 131st).

Cross lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Luke Fulda, who almost dropped a double-double on 25 points and nine rebounds. Fulda continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last four games he's played. Zach Nicastro was another key player, going 6 for 13 on his way to 17 points.

Charleston Collegiate's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Clayton Smith led the charge by dropping a double-double on 28 points and 14 boards. With that strong performance, Smith is now averaging an impressive 8.4 boards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Grant Morrison, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 assists.

Cross' defeat dropped their record down to 2-8. As for Charleston Collegiate, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 7-3.

Cross will be taking part in a tournament against Concord Christian at 5:00 p.m. on December 27th. Cross is facing Concord Christian at the right time seeing as Concord Christian is stuck on a seven-game losing streak. As for Charleston Collegiate, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 57-45 victory against Faith Christian on the 19th.
